Do you login into your Google Analytics dashboard only to see a bunch of new views, you get excited but then you realize they are your own views since you are the one using your site the most by updating, blogging, making changes and so on?
I know the feeling, been there done that, but worry not!
In this tutorial, I will show you how to tell Google to exclude your own views, in other words how to create a filter to exclude all the visits from your IP so that it will show only the views you want, from your visitors.
It’s very easy and very fast and you don’t need any special tools. You need only access to Google search and you need administrative access to your Google Analytics dashboard.
These are the steps for excluding your IP visits:
Login into your Google Analytics account. Click on Admin as you see it marked on my print screen below
Then you will be sent to the following screen with many different administrative options.
Locate and click on Filters, as I have marked with yellow below:
Once you click on filters you will be able to add your IP to be filtered out from Google Analytics.
Before you proceed you need to find out your IP number (if you don’t already know it). Go to Google and search for What’s my IP:
Copy the number you get.
Now go back to Google Analytics and once you have clicked on Filters you will be on this screen below.
Here you will need to create a new filter that will tell Google to not include any views from the above IP.
So, “Add Filter”
and then you can set the parameters for your Filter.
You can give it a name and as you can see I have already added a filter in my Google Analytics and I named it exclude ip so I know what it is about.
Then you need to choose the following options (marked yellow on the image below) from the drop-down menus:
Filter type: Predefined
Exclude – Traffic from the IP address – that are equal to
and then you add the Ip address that you got from Google search
And save it.
That’s it. You are all set. Now Google will not include your own visits on your website so you can update it freely without worrying it will mess with your statistics from other visitors.
I hope the above was helpful and feel free to share it with your friends.
See you next time.
